Fujitsu successfully develops cathode materials for high-pressure iron phosphate battery

Fujitsu Research Institute announced on May 29, 2017 that it has successfully developed a cathode material for high-pressure iron phosphate batteries that can match cobalt-based materials. Lithium cobaltate (LiCoO2) is currently used as the cathode material of lithium-ion batteries, and the depletion of cobalt materials may lead to a significant increase in the cost of battery materials.

Lithium batteries using iron-based materials are inferior to the latter in energy density compared with lithium batteries using cobalt-based materials. Therefore, the voltages of lithium-based lithium batteries are only 2.8 to 3.5 V, which is lower than 3.75 to 4.1 V of cobalt-based materials. Need to develop new iron-based materials.

This time, Fujitsu discovered that the deformation of the oxygen atoms around the iron atom was an important factor in increasing the voltage. A new material, Li5.33Fe5.33(P2O7)4, was developed. The button cell produced was also 3.8V. Voltage. This is even higher than the conventional iron phosphate battery represented by LiFePO4. However, the discharge capacity of the experimental coin cell experiment was 105 mAh/g. This result is about 25% lower than the theoretical value of 139 mAh/g and 137 mAh/g of LiCoO2, and remains to be further developed and improved in the future.
