Study: Antioxidants Accelerate Growth of Cancer Cells Independent of Natural Foods

According to a report from Al Jazeera's website on January 1st, a new study released on Wednesday, January 29th, has raised concerns about the long-standing belief that vitamin E and beta-carotene protect against cancer. The research suggests that these antioxidants might actually accelerate the growth of lung cancer cells in their early stages, particularly in individuals at higher risk, such as smokers. This finding contradicts the traditional theory that antioxidants help prevent cancer by neutralizing harmful free radicals. Bill Linder, a biologist at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, who has been studying "antioxidants and cancer cell activity," explained that antioxidants can enable cancer cells to bypass the body’s natural defenses. This allows existing cancer cells to spread more aggressively and makes undetectable small tumors more dangerous. Martin Birgu, another researcher from the same university, emphasized that excessive antioxidant intake could be harmful. He stated, “If I have a patient with lung cancer, I would never recommend they take antioxidants.” The study highlights a critical distinction: the negative effects observed are linked to antioxidant supplements, not natural sources like fruits and vegetables. The findings, published in *Science Translational Medicine*, do not indicate that antioxidants cause lung cancer, but they do show that they may speed up the growth of existing cancer cells. Importantly, the research does not address the impact of naturally occurring antioxidants found in food, which remain beneficial for overall health. This study adds to growing evidence challenging the widespread belief that taking vitamin supplements is always good for health, even for those who are not malnourished. While antioxidants do neutralize free radicals—harmful compounds produced during metabolism—they may not offer the protective benefits once thought. In the 1980s, antioxidants gained popularity due to the idea that they could protect DNA and reduce the risk of diseases like cancer. However, this latest research shows that in laboratory settings, antioxidants can promote cancer growth under certain conditions. In the experiment, scientists tested vitamin E and another antioxidant on mice with early-stage lung cancer. The vitamin E dose was similar to what people typically take as a supplement, while the other antioxidant was used in lower amounts. The results showed that mice given antioxidants had 2.8 times more cancer cells than those that didn’t receive them. These cancer cells became more aggressive and led to faster deaths. Additionally, antioxidants were found to speed up the growth of lab-cultured cancer cells. The study also identified a key mechanism: when the P53 protein system—a natural defense against cancer—is compromised, antioxidants can help cancer cells escape detection and grow unchecked. This discovery provides a clearer understanding of how antioxidants might influence cancer progression, offering important insights for future research and medical advice.
