Driving children during the Spring Festival fasten seat belts

As the Spring Festival of 2014 approaches, the nation's road transport system is reaching its busiest period. According to an online survey conducted by Autohome, nearly 60% of respondents planning to travel during the holiday intend to drive themselves. Out of over 4,200 participants, 59.96% said they will go home, visit relatives, or take a trip by car. This growing trend of self-driving highlights the urgent need for increased attention to the safety of passengers, particularly children. Despite the rising number of drivers, child safety remains a major concern. A recent report from Autohome revealed that only about 10% of children in China use child safety seats. When asked about the safest way to transport children, 11.56% of respondents believed that placing a child alone in the back seat with an adult sitting next to them was safe, while 7.89% thought that using regular seat belts was the best option. Unfortunately, these methods are far from safe and can actually put children at serious risk. Professor Zhang Jinhua from Tsinghua University’s Automotive Collision Test Center emphasized that in the event of a sudden accident, a parent’s arms cannot protect their child. Instead, the force of impact could cause severe injury, as the child may be thrown forward or crushed between the adult and the seat. Similarly, using adult seat belts on children is also dangerous. These seat belts are designed for adults and do not fit children properly. If too tight, they can cause fatal injuries to the waist or neck; if too loose, the child might be ejected from the vehicle during a crash. Nguyen, who leads the public awareness campaign for child safety seats at Autohome, stated that the ultimate goal is to implement nationwide legislation requiring the use of child safety seats. Currently, lack of legal enforcement, low public awareness, and a sense of false security are major obstacles to widespread adoption. In 2014, Autohome plans to continue its efforts, including crash simulations and trial sessions, to help more families understand the importance of child safety seats. In a positive development, Shanghai is set to introduce new regulations on March 1, 2014, under its "Regulations on the Protection of Minors." The law mandates that children under 12 years old must not sit in the front passenger seat, and those under four must use properly installed child safety seats. This marks a significant step toward safer transportation for children. It is hoped that this model will soon be adopted across other major cities and eventually nationwide.
