Xinhua News Agency, Tokyo, February 20 (Reporter: Lan Jianzhong): Japan's Institute of Substances and Materials issued a communique a few days ago that its researchers have developed a man-made fiber that can adsorb uremic toxins contained in the blood of patients with renal failure. Creatinine, this result will help develop portable small dialysis devices.
A research group led by the agency's chief researcher Hiroaki Ebara mixed zeolites capable of adsorbing creatinine into the resin to produce a very fine fiber and made the fiber into a non-woven fabric. Serum experiments showed that as long as about 16 grams of fiber, you can absorb all the creatinine produced by a person weighing 60 kilograms within one hour.
Creatinine is a low-molecular-weight uremic toxin in the blood, which is formed by the breakdown of creatine and is a major indicator of renal function. In the normal operation of the kidneys, creatinine is excreted into the body through the urine, but the kidneys of patients with renal failure cannot filter metabolic waste and uremic toxins in the blood, so dialysis must be performed.
In addition to creatinine, there are many different types of uremic toxins. The research team believes that man-made fibers that adsorb other uremic toxins can be produced by changing the type of zeolite. The results of this paper have been published in the new issue of "Journal of Biological Materials".
At present, there are more than 300,000 chronic renal failure patients in Japan undergoing dialysis treatment, which costs about US$20 billion in medical expenses each year. The dialysis device is relatively large and consumes a lot of water and electricity, causing a lot of inconvenience to the patient.
