Red light to lock the car door

In the bustling city, where traffic lights control the flow of vehicles, a new form of crime has emerged—car door thefts. Recently, a man reported to the Tianhe River Police that he had been targeted by a "car racer" while driving, resulting in the loss of his iPhone 5. The incident sparked an investigation, which led to the arrest of a gang specializing in stealing items from the front and back seats of cars using a method known as "slap door." On May 14th, at around 6 p.m., Ms. Liang was driving home after work when she stopped at a red light at a junction in the Tianhe District. Suddenly, she heard a loud "bang" from the rear of her car. Turning around, she saw a man patting the back of her vehicle. Confused, she leaned forward to check, only to realize that her phone on the passenger seat had vanished. It was a brand-new iPhone, purchased just days before for over 5,500 yuan. After a moment of shock, she recalled hearing a soft "click" sound as if someone had reached into the car through the open window. She immediately drove to the nearby Linhe Police Station to report the incident. Her story was not isolated. In fact, the police were already investigating similar cases across the area. By May 17th, the special task force had split into two teams and successfully arrested four suspects: Zhang Mokui (35), Weng Mou (36), Zhang (42), and Hwang (45). These individuals were linked to five similar incidents, and the gang was dismantled. During their interrogation, the suspects admitted to frequently gathering at traffic light intersections, waiting for red lights to strike. They would look for cars with open windows and valuables left unattended on the front or back seats. Once a target was identified, the gang worked in coordination. One member would knock on the car’s side or rear to distract the driver, while another would quickly enter the vehicle through the open window to snatch the belongings. If caught, they would even grab the item and flee. Further investigation revealed that all four suspects had prior criminal records. Some had been released from prison just recently, having previously served time for similar offenses. The police issued a warning to drivers, especially during traffic congestion. They advised people to keep their doors locked and windows closed, and to avoid leaving valuables like wallets, phones, or laptops visible inside the car. Criminals often use the distraction of a "tap" or "bang" to lure drivers out of their vehicles, creating the perfect opportunity to steal or snatch items. Stay alert, stay safe, and always keep your valuables secure.
