The company extended its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and expressed sincere sympathy for those affected. Following an internal investigation, the station manager and another employee from the Jinguoping Gas Station have been dismissed from their positions.
The Jinguoping Gas Station is located in Jinguoping Town, Badong County, Enshi City, Hubei Province. It's approximately 200 kilometers from the Enshi Mountain Road and just one kilometer from the town center. The location is remote, sparsely populated, and situated in a mountainous area. According to preliminary information, the gas station adjusted its operating hours starting from July 2011, with shifts from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM, and these changes were publicly announced. However, the incident occurred at around 10:00 PM that evening, during a dark and rainy night.
Two vehicles crossed the warning line and entered the gas station. A crowd gathered, and people began knocking on the windows, creating a chaotic scene. The station manager later explained that due to concerns about safety—especially after previous incidents of robbery at local stations—they were hesitant to open the doors and provide fuel. This decision, however, has sparked widespread criticism.
A Sinopec spokesperson said, "As a company committed to core values, we believe that saving lives should always come first. Refusing to refuel an ambulance, regardless of the reason, is unacceptable. We are deeply shocked by what happened and extend our sincere apologies."
A representative from Hubei Petroleum Branch stated that the company has always required all stations, whether open 24/7 or not, to provide emergency fueling services for ambulances, fire trucks, police cars, and disaster relief vehicles. They acknowledged shortcomings in the management of the Jinguoping Gas Station and confirmed that the station manager and another staff member have been dismissed. The company will conduct further investigations and hold senior management accountable if necessary. In addition, they plan to improve staff training and strengthen internal procedures to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
