At 2:30 pm on July 20th, a tragic accident occurred at the Bank of Communications Building located at 191 Sungai West Road in Jinhua. A male cleaner, identified as Mr. Lei, 48 years old from Hunan, accidentally fell from the building while cleaning the exterior walls and died instantly. The incident took place during a renovation period, and the building was under active maintenance.
Mr. Qi, the bank’s security guard who was on duty at the time, witnessed the event. He recalled seeing two cleaners suspended by ropes, working on the outer walls. Suddenly, he heard a loud noise, which he initially thought was a construction scaffold collapsing. When he rushed to check, he was shocked by what he saw: the bank's entrance had a glass roof with two legs, and the ground was covered in broken glass and blood.
Qi immediately called for help. The Jiangnan Fire Brigade arrived quickly, climbed out of a fourth-floor window, and reached the protruding platform above the bank entrance. They managed to pull out a large piece of tempered glass, revealing a man trapped in the steel frame. However, when the firefighters brought him to the top of the door, he was already gone—confirmed dead at the scene.
According to reports, Mr. Lei had been temporarily hired by a local cleaning company in Jinhua along with his nephew a few days before the accident. He was working on the 12th floor when the tragedy struck. Preliminary investigations suggest that the fall was caused by the wearing out of his safety rope, raising concerns about the safety measures in place during high-altitude work.
Industry experts noted that workers involved in external wall cleaning should hold proper high-altitude operation certificates. However, in practice, many lack these qualifications. In Jinhua, the number of certified workers is limited, and during busy periods, companies often hire unqualified personnel on a temporary basis—an all-too-common practice in the industry.
The aftermath of the incident is currently being handled through negotiations, with authorities investigating further to prevent similar accidents in the future. This unfortunate event has once again highlighted the risks faced by workers in high-risk jobs and the urgent need for better safety regulations and enforcement.
