At 2:30 pm on July 20th, a tragic accident occurred at the Bank of Communications Building located at 191 Sungai West Road in Jinhua. A male cleaner, surnamed Lei, fell from the building while cleaning the exterior walls and died instantly. The incident took place during ongoing renovation work at the high-rise structure.
Mr. Qi, the bank’s security guard, was on duty at the time. He witnessed two cleaners hanging from ropes, working on the building's outer walls. Suddenly, he heard a loud noise, which he initially thought was a scaffold collapsing. When he rushed to check, he was shocked by what he saw: the glass roof of the bank’s entrance was shattered, with broken glass and blood scattered across the ground.
Mr. Qi immediately called for help. Firefighters from the Jiangnan Fire Brigade arrived quickly and climbed through a window on the fourth floor. They reached the protruding platform above the bank’s entrance, where they found a large hole in the tempered glass. A man was trapped inside the steel frame. Despite their efforts, the man was already gone by the time they retrieved him.
According to reports, the victim, surnamed Lei, was 48 years old and originally from Hunan. He had recently been temporarily hired by a local cleaning company in Jinhua along with his nephew to assist with the renovation work. At the time of the accident, he was working on the 12th floor.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the accident was caused by the wearing out of Lei’s safety rope. Industry experts noted that workers involved in high-altitude cleaning should hold proper qualifications, but in practice, many lack valid certifications. In Jinhua, it is common for companies to hire unqualified workers during busy periods, often leading to dangerous situations.
The aftermath of the incident is currently being handled, with discussions ongoing regarding compensation and responsibility. This tragic event has raised concerns about safety protocols in the cleaning industry, emphasizing the need for stricter regulations and better training for workers engaged in high-risk tasks.
