The jointing stage of corn is a critical period for water and nutrient management throughout the entire growth cycle. During this phase, proper irrigation and fertilization are essential to support healthy plant development and the normal formation of tassels. In the large trumpet stage, adequate water supply is necessary to maintain soil moisture at around 70% of field capacity. This ensures that the plants have sufficient water to sustain their rapid growth. Watering should be combined with the application of quick-release nitrogen fertilizer to maximize nutrient uptake and promote vigorous growth. In the large trumpet stage, it is recommended to apply about 15 kg of urea per mu (approximately 667 square meters). For dry land, this should be done in conjunction with rainfall, while irrigated fields require watering after applying the fertilizer. The top dressing can be applied either between the rows or directly at the base of the plants. After watering, it's important to perform weeding and soil cultivation promptly. These practices help control weeds, retain moisture, and improve root development, ultimately enhancing yield and profitability. During the jointing stage, common pests include corn borers, aphids, red spider mites, and armyworms. To manage corn borers, you can mix zinc granules with fine sand in a ratio of 1:50 and apply it through irrigation. This method can achieve up to 90% effectiveness in controlling borer infestations. Aphids and red spider mites can be controlled using insecticides like Diquat or other suitable pesticides. Armyworms can be effectively managed by spraying a 40% dimethoate solution diluted 1500–2000 times, which has proven to be highly effective in reducing pest damage. Proper monitoring and timely intervention during the jointing stage are crucial for ensuring strong plant development and minimizing losses from pests and environmental stress. By maintaining good water and nutrient management, along with effective pest control, farmers can significantly improve the quality and quantity of their corn harvest.
