Water demand during maize jointing

The jointing stage of corn is one of the most critical periods for water and nutrient management throughout its entire growth cycle. During this phase, proper irrigation and fertilization play a vital role in ensuring healthy plant development and normal tassel formation. In the large trumpet stage, it's essential to maintain sufficient moisture in the field. The soil should be kept consistently moist but not waterlogged, with the field's water-holding capacity maintained at around 70%. Watering should be combined with the application of quick-release nitrogen fertilizer to support optimal growth.

To manage corn borers, a mixture of disulfoton granules and fine sand in a ratio of 1:50 can be applied to the soil, providing effective control with up to 90% success. Aphids and red spiders can be controlled using insecticides such as Daqinling or other approved pesticides. Armyworms can be effectively managed by spraying 40% dimethoate diluted at a ratio of 1500–2000 times, which has shown excellent results in reducing infestations.

Proper attention during the jointing stage ensures that the corn plant develops strong stalks, healthy leaves, and well-formed ears. It's a time when both water and nutrients must be carefully managed to maximize the potential of the crop. Farmers are advised to monitor the field regularly and adjust irrigation and fertilization based on weather conditions and plant needs. By following these best practices, farmers can significantly improve their harvest quality and overall productivity.
