In a distant past, when two graceful phoenixes soared through the sky, they occasionally heard cries of sorrow echoing from below. Looking down, they saw a land in despair—plagues ravaged the locusts, disease spread among the people, crops withered, and the eyes of the people were filled with sorrow and pain.
Moved by compassion, the just and kind phoenix decided to use its power to banish the plague and bring relief to the suffering souls. After great effort, its wish was fulfilled. Grateful people begged the phoenix to stay, and together they sang and danced in harmony. Touched by their sincerity, the phoenix chose to settle on Kangshanling, a mountainous area. Soon, the rocks around the phoenix’s dwelling turned white and translucent, like polished jade. This mountain was named Yuyan Mountain, meaning "Jade Mountain."
On Yuyan Mountain, hundreds of birds sang joyfully, and the people lived in peace and prosperity. But soon, a pair of cruel birds and lions arrived from the mountains. Envious of the phoenix's grace and the people's love, they plotted to capture the phoenix and seize the phoenix marsh. One day, while the male phoenix was out foraging, the female was attacked by the lion bird as she was in her nesting period. The brave female fought back fiercely, and their battle shook the jade-like rocks, causing the sun and moon to seem dim.
When the male phoenix returned, he found his mate wounded, blood staining the jade mountain. In a final act of courage, the phoenix defeated the enemy with wisdom and strength, and buried the innocent phoenix egg under tears. Then, it left the nest.
As the phoenix departed, the people mourned its loss. They prayed to the heavens, asking the gods to bless the just phoenix. Their sincerity and the phoenix’s blood touched the world. The Jade Emperor sent his son to investigate, and the Bodhisattva of Tibet transformed the phoenix’s blood and egg into a sacred stone known as the Dan Stone. This stone was said to carry the power to ward off evil, promote good, and spread love.
Since then, the phoenix’s blood and eggs remained buried beneath Yuyan Mountain for thousands of years, becoming the rare and precious gem known today as bloodstone. The stone got its name from the color of the blood that once stained the jade-like rock. It resembled the blood of a slaughtered chicken, hence the name “bloodstone.†Over time, the descendants who mined the area came to know this stone as a symbol of resilience, sacrifice, and divine blessing.
