It depends more on the purchase of panel furniture

In the world of Suzhou furniture, panel furniture stands out for its cost-effectiveness compared to solid wood options. However, many consumers remain concerned about its environmental safety. The "Weekly Quality Lecture Hall," jointly organized by the Yangtze Evening News and the Jiangsu Provincial Quality Supervision Bureau, recently invited Zheng Honglian, deputy director of the floor furniture department at the Changzhou Quality Inspection Institute, to discuss how to choose safe and reliable panel furniture. One of the main issues with unqualified panel furniture is excessive formaldehyde emissions. Unlike solid wood furniture, panel furniture is typically made from man-made boards such as medium-density fiberboard (MDF) or particle board. These materials are created by bonding plant fibers with adhesives, and if low-quality glue is used or too much is applied, it can lead to high levels of formaldehyde release. "Proper quality control during production ensures that formaldehyde emissions stay within standard limits," Zheng Honglian explained. She advised consumers not to be overly concerned about panel furniture, as long as it meets national standards, it can be safely used. Many people rely on the smell of formaldehyde to detect whether it's present. A strong, irritating odor when opening a drawer or cabinet may indicate excessive formaldehyde. However, this isn't always accurate. While ventilation is a common method to reduce formaldehyde after renovation, Zheng noted that it only removes surface-level formaldehyde. The chemical can still be released under different environmental conditions, so it's recommended to ventilate regularly even after the furniture is in use. Despite these concerns, there's no need to panic. National regulations strictly limit formaldehyde emissions in panel furniture. If unsure, consumers can request a quality inspection report from the seller or contact a relevant testing agency. When purchasing panel furniture, don’t just rely on your senses. Always ask for the environmental protection certificate and quality inspection reports. Zheng Honglian recommends buying from well-known brands in certified furniture markets. These brands often have stricter quality controls, and the market itself conducts regular sampling to ensure product safety. Another important detail to check is the edge banding. Poorly applied edge banding not only affects the durability of the furniture but also allows more formaldehyde to escape. When inspecting, pay attention to areas like the sides of bedside tables, drawer panels, and other hard-to-see spots. Finally, proper maintenance is key to extending the life of your furniture. Avoid drastic changes in humidity, as extreme moisture can cause swelling or cracking. When cleaning, avoid using wet cloths, as they can damage the surface over time. With the right care, panel furniture can last for many years and provide excellent value.
