In the world of Suzhou furniture, panel furniture stands out for its affordability compared to solid wood options. However, many consumers remain concerned about its environmental safety. In response to these concerns, the "Weekly Quality Lecture Hall," organized by the Yangtze Evening News and the Jiangsu Provincial Quality Supervision Bureau, invited Zheng Honglian, deputy director of the floor furniture department at the Changzhou Quality Inspection Institute, to share insights on how to choose safe and reliable panel furniture.
One of the main issues with unqualified panel furniture is excessive formaldehyde emissions. Unlike solid wood furniture, panel furniture is typically made from man-made boards such as medium-density fiberboard (MDF) or particle board. These materials are created by bonding plant fibers with adhesives, and if low-quality glue is used or too much is applied, it can lead to harmful formaldehyde levels.
"Proper quality control during production ensures that formaldehyde emissions stay within standard limits," Zheng Honglian explained. She reassured consumers that as long as the products meet national standards, they can be safely used without unnecessary worry.
Many people rely on the smell of formaldehyde to detect its presence. If they experience strong irritation, like tearing eyes or coughing, they may assume the furniture is unsafe. However, this method isn't always reliable. While ventilation is a common practice after renovation, it only removes some surface-level formaldehyde. The chemical can still be released under different environmental conditions, so continuous ventilation is recommended.
If consumers are still unsure, they can request a quality inspection report from the seller. It’s also important to look for an environmental protection certificate when purchasing. Buying from well-known brands in a reputable furniture market can provide additional assurance, as these manufacturers usually maintain stricter quality controls.
When selecting panel furniture, attention should also be paid to details like edge banding and finish quality. Some products may look good on the outside but have poor internal construction. Consumers are advised to open drawers and check the inside of the furniture for better quality assessment.
Edge banding plays a crucial role in both functionality and safety. Properly sealed edges help prevent formaldehyde from escaping, especially in areas like the sides of bedside tables or drawer panels—often overlooked parts.
Lastly, proper maintenance is key to extending the life of your furniture. Avoid drastic changes in humidity, as extreme moisture levels can cause swelling or cracking. When cleaning, use a dry cloth instead of a damp one to protect the surface.
By being informed and careful, consumers can enjoy the benefits of panel furniture while ensuring their health and safety.
