How to judge the quality of quartz countertops

When purchasing quartz stone, one of the most critical factors to consider is the surface finish. The finish determines whether the material will stain or absorb color over time. Quartz stone can be quite sensitive—any oil or liquid that comes into contact with it may leave a permanent mark. To test the quality, you can use a marker and scratch the surface. If the mark wipes away easily, it’s a good sign that the stone won’t absorb color. However, if the mark remains, it might not be genuine quartz. Many high-quality quartz stones from reputable manufacturers have coded information on the back, so always check for these signs. Another way to assess quality is by testing hardness, which indicates wear resistance. A simple method is to use a steel knife to lightly scratch the surface. If the knife leaves a visible mark, it's likely not real quartz. For example, when using a steel knife on "white crystal" quartz, a fake product will show a white inner layer where it's scratched, as the material isn't hard enough to resist the blade. On the other hand, real quartz will only show a black mark, and the stone itself won’t be damaged. Quartz stone is composed of 94% natural quartz and 6% resin, giving it a hardness rating of around 7 on the Mohs scale. In contrast, granite countertops are typically made from marble powder and resin, with a hardness ranging between 4 to 6. This means quartz is more resistant to scratches and wear. Additionally, quartz has excellent heat resistance. It can withstand temperatures up to 300°C without deforming or cracking, making it ideal for kitchen countertops. Granite, however, contains more resin and is more prone to warping or burning at high temperatures. Another important factor is radiation. Quartz stone is non-radiative, as it’s made from non-radiative quartz. On the other hand, granite, which often includes natural marble dust, may contain trace amounts of radioactive elements, potentially posing health risks over time. When examining samples, note that granite usually comes with a protective film on its surface, while quartz stone doesn’t require any such coating. This makes quartz a preferred choice for countertops. High-quality quartz countertops typically use 100% premium aluminum powder, ensuring durability and longevity. To test the authenticity of artificial stone or quartz, you can use white vinegar. Pour a tablespoon of white vinegar onto the surface and wait 30 seconds. If bubbles form, it indicates the presence of calcium carbonate, which is common in lower-quality products. These materials tend to age quickly, crack, and stain easily. If the price per meter is below 700 yuan, it might be a sign that the product is not genuine quartz but rather granite. Always do your research and choose a reliable supplier to ensure you get a high-quality, durable, and safe countertop material.
