According to an old tale, the art of boxwood carving was first created by a young man named Ye Chengrong during the late Qing Dynasty. Born in Yueqing County, Zhejiang Province, Ye was known for his curiosity and talent. One day, while playing near a village temple, he witnessed an elderly craftsman shaping a Buddha statue. The skillful technique fascinated him so much that he secretly practiced by making clay models in the woods, mimicking what he saw. Impressed by Ye’s determination, the old artisan took him as an apprentice and taught him five essential skills: shaping, sculpting, coloring, gilding, and relief work. Within a year, Ye had mastered the craft. Later, while visiting a Buddhist statue at Zixia Mountain in Baotai, Ye encountered local people who used boxwood for their carvings. Inspired, he decided to try working with this unique material. He discovered that although boxwood was tough and hard to carve, its fine texture made it ideal for detailed work. This led to the birth of boxwood carving as a distinct folk art form in China. Initially, Ye used sharp-pointed knives, which gave his figures a somewhat rigid appearance. However, later, a Wenzhou artist named Zhu Ziqi introduced a new technique using a semi-circular knife, creating smooth and elegant folds known as “reverse mouth.†In 1972, Premier Zhou Enlai presented a boxwood carving titled “Red Silk Dance,†created by Ye Runzhou from Wenzhou, as a gift to the Canadian delegation. Today, boxwood carvings are celebrated both in China and internationally, representing a beautiful blend of tradition and artistic excellence.
