Analysis of the Rolling Behavior of Bearings

When a bearing operates under a radial load, there is a distinction between the loaded zone and the non-loaded zone. If the bearing has a certain amount of radial clearance, the rolling elements in the non-loaded zone may not be fully supported. In such cases, the centrifugal force alone might cause the rolling elements to come into contact with the inner race or cage.

This phenomenon typically occurs at low speeds when the centrifugal force is less than the weight of the rolling elements. As a result, the rolling elements can fall out of place, causing vibration and noise. This behavior has several characteristics:

  1. The occurrence of this issue varies depending on the speed and the scale of the bearing.
  2. It is more likely to happen when only a radial load is applied and there is a large radial clearance.
  3. The sound produced may be intermittent, making it difficult to detect consistently.
  4. Using lubricating grease increases the likelihood of this issue, while oil tends to reduce it. Grease can trap particles, leading to increased friction and wear.
  5. The vibration caused by this problem can propagate through the bearing structure.
  6. It often results in secondary vibrations in the outer ring, which can indicate potential misalignment or damage over time.
