The specific structure of the mold has an inner profile which is an internal tooth shape that cooperates with the punch.
For the fine punching of the inner and middle holes, using two sets of molds to achieve the forming objective not only fails to meet technical requirements such as coaxiality but also results in low efficiency. Therefore, a single composite mold is necessary to perform both operations. Another technical challenge of the part is the half-punching of the tooth shape and the punching of the central hole with a diameter of 510 mm. To combine the center hole punching and the half-punch internal tooth shape on the fine punching die, the small punch head and the unloading plate (top piece) are set 3 mm higher than the lower plane of the upper die (as long as it exceeds the size of the non-punched portion, which is 215 mm). The center hole punching must also be separated under three-directional pressure, and the height of the pusher block is adjusted to match the height of the small punch to ensure the quality of the punching process. This way, during one stroke of the press, the tooth shape is formed and the central hole is punched out, ensuring the coaxiality between the central hole and the tooth shape, thus meeting the technical requirements of the part.
The pressing method was chosen based on the characteristics and requirements of the part. Specifically, the outer part of the tooth shape remains as part of the component rather than being considered scrap. If a ring-shaped pressing plate were used (with a toothed contact surface between the finger pressing plate and the blank), it could easily cause indentations on the outer area of the tooth shape, which is not allowed and would affect the quality and appearance of the part. Therefore, a boss-shaped pressure plate was adopted. This design allows the inner contour of the pressure plate to match the internal tooth shape of the punch. Considering the size of the platen hole, the shape of the cylinder, and the factory’s available equipment, a 2500 kN press was selected. According to later testing, the force calculations were generally satisfactory, confirming the feasibility of the design.
