Pump working principle

A pump is a mechanical device designed to move liquids or increase the pressure of fluids. It plays a crucial role in various industries, including shipbuilding, oil extraction, and construction equipment like cranes. Although pumps may vary in structure and materials depending on their application, their basic working principle remains similar. Let’s take a closer look at how a pump operates. When a pump is activated, the impeller inside the pump casing begins to rotate at high speed. Before starting, it's essential to fill the pump with liquid to ensure proper operation. As the impeller spins, it generates centrifugal force, which pushes the liquid outward into the pump chamber. As the liquid moves away from the impeller, its velocity decreases, creating a low-pressure area at the center of the impeller. This low-pressure zone allows atmospheric pressure to push more liquid from the source, such as a reservoir or well, through the suction pipe into the pump. The pump’s diffusion chamber has a fixed volume. As more liquid is thrown out by the impeller, the pressure inside the chamber gradually increases. Eventually, the liquid is forced out through the discharge outlet. This continuous process enables the pump to draw in liquid from the source and push it out steadily, making it ideal for various applications. Over time, pumps can experience wear and tear due to factors like corrosion, erosion, and mechanical stress. Therefore, when selecting a pump, it's important to choose one that matches the specific requirements of the task. Choosing a pump with an excessively high flow rate may not be efficient and could lead to unnecessary costs. For example, in mountainous areas or deep wells, a pump with a higher lift capacity is needed, while in flat regions, a pump with a lower lift but higher flow rate might be more suitable. Understanding these differences helps ensure optimal performance and longevity of the pump.
