The price of solid wood furniture rises. Is pure wood furniture "impure"?

Driven by the principles of low carbon living and environmental protection, solid wood furniture—the oldest type of furniture—is gaining renewed popularity among consumers. As more people seek to enhance their living spaces with natural and durable materials, the demand for solid wood furniture has surged. However, this rising demand has also led to a significant increase in prices, especially for high-end varieties like mahogany furniture (see decorative image). To attract buyers, some sellers have taken advantage of the trend by labeling non-100% solid wood products as "all solid wood." Others mix different grades of solid wood, creating hybrid pieces that are sold under the guise of premium solid wood furniture. This practice has left many consumers confused about what they’re actually purchasing.

Can consumers buy genuine solid wood furniture? What is the price of solid wood furniture?

Prices of Solid Wood Furniture Are Rising

In stores across Futian and Luohu, "solid wood furniture" is prominently displayed, ranging from well-known brands to various types of solid wood options. From a material perspective, you can find furniture made from mahogany, beech, ash, pine, and more. In terms of design, there are beds, tables, chairs (see decorative image), cabinets, and much more. During random interviews with local residents, over 70% expressed interest in purchasing solid wood furniture. Miss Chen, for instance, prefers it because it's made from natural wood, which is eco-friendly and long-lasting. Some others mentioned that choosing solid wood furniture is part of their lifestyle—“we’ve always used wooden furniture.” A salesperson noted that customers tend to prefer solid wood furniture, especially for children’s rooms. According to Red Star Macalline’s national furniture sales data, solid wood furniture has seen a sharp rise in sales, while other categories have declined. Many home store employees also report that solid wood furniture is becoming increasingly popular, and the appeal of board furniture has somewhat decreased. Industry experts predict that solid wood furniture will become a major growth area in home furnishings, with branded companies starting to expand their solid wood product lines. With the increased demand, the price of solid wood furniture has also gone up. According to the China Wood Industry Letter, since 2013, the price of imported wood has been rising rapidly, and domestic logs have also seen a significant upward trend. For example, hemlock prices have steadily climbed, reaching over 1,000 yuan per cubic meter. In May this year, the price index for hemlock hit a high of 1,136 yuan per cubic meter. Additionally, the new revised "Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora" (CITES) came into effect last month. Several rosewood species, including red rosewood, Central American red rosewood, and South American red rosewood, are now listed in the convention, requiring permits for international trade. This has caused raw material prices for mahogany to rise sharply. Compared to other types of solid wood furniture, mahogany not only commands the highest prices but also shows the most pronounced price increases. Is “Pure Solid Wood” Really Pure? According to the "General Technical Conditions for Wooden Furniture" standard, solid wood furniture is categorized into three types: pure solid wood furniture, real wood furniture, and solid wood veneer furniture. Only furniture entirely made of solid wood can be called "pure solid wood." Real wood furniture uses solid wood for key parts like tabletops and legs, but other components may be made from artificial boards such as particleboard or MDF. Solid wood veneer furniture is made from artificial boards with a thin layer of real wood on top. Despite efforts to avoid misleading consumers, many salespeople still refer to mixed or veneered furniture as "solid wood." In one children’s furniture store, a bed advertised as solid wood was found to be mostly made of pine. When questioned, the salesperson said, “If you want pure solid wood, it would cost much more.” Ms. Li previously bought a double bed online, only to discover that while the headboard was 100% beech, the base was made of pine. Although both are solid wood, she felt misled due to the price difference. Industry experts advise consumers to check product manuals and ask sellers directly whether the furniture is truly pure solid wood. If deceived, consumers can file complaints with the Consumer Council or take legal action. How to Identify Genuine Solid Wood Furniture Genuine solid wood furniture is made entirely of solid wood, without any edge banding or synthetic surfaces. The grain and annual rings should be visible, and the color tends to darken over time. If certain parts do not match this feature, it may be a combination piece. If joints are covered with edge banding, or if the surface looks too uniform and doesn’t change color over time, it might be solid wood veneer. How to Maintain Solid Wood Furniture Regularly clean the furniture using a soft cloth, following the direction of the wood grain. Avoid using dry cloths to prevent scratches. Apply wax every 6 to 12 months. Before waxing, clean the furniture with warm, non-alkaline soapy water to remove old wax. For dining tables, use table mats to protect the surface from spills and stains. Avoid contact with corrosive substances like alcohol, nail polish, or oils.
