At 5 a.m. yesterday, a tragic choking incident occurred at a gas construction site located at the intersection of Wuzhong Avenue and Youxin Road in Suzhou City. Three workers were immediately taken to the hospital, but two of them were found without signs of life upon arrival. The third worker remained in critical condition in the intensive care unit as of late afternoon. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the accident, and local gas safety inspections have been initiated.
The incident took place during underground work near a greening and relocation site on the east side of Hamamatsu Road, close to the Wuzhong Avenue and Yuxin Elevated Highway intersection. According to reports from local citizens, the three gas workers accidentally suffocated while working in a manhole. The scene showed few visible signs of the accident, with only a few personal items like a gray jacket, gloves, and tools remaining nearby.
A worker at the site explained that the three had been working underground when they suddenly collapsed. One of them was reportedly rescued and later fainted. The gas company did not expand the emergency response after the initial maintenance, and many residents were unaware of the incident until the morning. Some reported smelling gas around 7 a.m., but assumed it was part of regular pipeline repairs.
The victims, all migrant workers in their early 30s, were not from Suzhou. Their families were informed later in the day, and funeral services began shortly after. According to officials from the Wuzhong District Safety Supervision Bureau, the workers were experienced and had valid certifications for gas pipeline construction and maintenance. They were hired by a specialized team based in Liyang.
Despite the company's claim that the incident was not caused by a gas leak but rather by improper handling, the exact cause remains under investigation. The gas company emphasized that proper safety procedures should have been followed, including ventilation and gas detection before entering the well. However, it is unclear whether natural gas or another asphyxiating agent was involved.
The Wuzhong Gas Company has stated that they are conducting further investigations into the incident and have already carried out safety checks across the city. Reporters will continue to monitor the situation as more details emerge.
