Mercedes-Benz uses the world's first plastic rear axle gear beam

ContiTech's vibration control and BASF teamed up to invent the world's first plastic gearbox beam and successfully applied to the rear axle sub-frame of the Mercedes S-Class. The assembly is based on the Ultramid A3WG10 CR polyamide from BASF, which is enhanced and optimized to withstand high mechanical loads. Compared to previous aluminum die-cast beams, this highly durable component not only reduces weight by 25%, but also provides better mechanical properties, even at high temperatures to meet the latest crash requirements. BASF's simulation tool Ultrasim also made a significant contribution to the excellent performance of this product.
The load-bearing structure of the plastic part meets all the requirements for the static and dynamic loads of the gearbox beam. As a central component of the rear axle, it supports partial torque transfer from the engine to the transmission and withstands a portion of the fixed load. That's why Mercedes-Benz's all-wheel-drive models (except for the AMG series) will all use Ultramid beams.
In order to be able to replace aluminum in demanding, collision-related applications, these plastics must meet very high mechanical requirements: BASF's Ultramid A3WG10 CR (CR=collision resistance) contains 50% glass reinforcement for optimum strength. And stiffness, able to withstand high bending torque. In addition, the material also has good NVH performance (NVH = noise, vibration, smoothness).
Kai Fruehauf, Head of ContiTech's Vibration Control Business Unit, said: "Our new rear axle transmission drive beam will be a milestone in the application of polyamide automotive. It is bound to lead a new trend in the automotive industry. Performance plastics can replace metals, and we must use the best optimized materials. For example, the Ultramid series developed by BASF is the best material for our gearbox transmission beams."
