In the near future, wearable multifunction sensors can not only be used to monitor the vital signs of the human body, but may even change the way humans interact with computers. In order to achieve this goal as quickly as possible, a group of researchers from the Kings University of Technology (KAUST) recently used a low-cost daily necessities to develop a multi-functional paper sensor that claims to measure pressure and temperature in real time, and also to monitor Humidity or pH.

The researchers integrated aluminum foil, tape, sponges, and memos onto a paper platform and then connected it to a conductive device. The research team said that they have discovered the special properties of different materials, such as porosity, adsorption and elasticity. For example, they can use a sticky note to test the humidity and use an HB pencil to color the sticky note to monitor the pH. In addition, the sponge can have the function of monitoring pressure.

Muhammad Mustafa Hussain, a researcher at the KAUST nanotechnology integration lab, said: "This research has the potential to revolutionize the electronics industry. It also opens the door to commercial high-performance sensor markets."

Hussain added that their next stage goal is to integrate sensors into medical monitoring systems. It is hoped that such sensors can be used to measure human vital signs such as heart rate, blood pressure, and respiratory frequency in real time.
