Development of UV coatings with double standards

UV curable coatings, like waterborne coatings, have long been recognized as the mainstream of environmentally friendly coatings. Compared to water-based coatings, UV-curable coatings are more resistant to chemical corrosion and their coatings are softer. However, the excessive viscosity and the irritancy and toxicity of the reactive diluent make it a discount in environmental performance. In contrast, water-based paints, although superior in environmental performance, but there are improvements in the appearance and hardness of the paint film. Therefore, water-based UV coatings that combine the strengths of both have also become hot areas of research in recent years.

Waterborne UV coatings have significant advantages over traditional UV-curable coatings. Because water is used as a diluent, it is easier to adjust the rheology of the coating and the equipment is easy to clean. It is also more diversified in the coating method, and can be applied by shower coating, spray coating or roller coating. More importantly, the use of organic solvents is avoided, reducing VOC and toxicity problems during construction.

From a technical point of view, the combination of water-based acrylic, polyurethane or alkyd resin allows the water-based UV coating to have good adhesion to the substrate and a certain degree of softness. These properties are also water-based UV coatings. The application has broadened the field. In general, it is currently being applied and promoted in furniture wood lacquers, plastic varnishes, and printing inks.

From the perspective of social economy, with the increasing awareness of environmental protection, especially the national environmental protection policy of low carbon and emission reduction, consumers have more acceptance of environmentally friendly products such as water-based paints, as water-based UV coatings have inherent advantages in this respect, and the space for future development will be broader.

From the perspective of production cost analysis,

1. UV paint cost: UV paint 80~100 yuan, spraying amount is about 100~130g/m2, UV topcoat meter is 8~13 yuan/m2;

2. Production forecast analysis: The removal of the primer production capacity is not included. The UV equipment runs at a speed of 5~10m/min. It can be produced with a width of 600mm and can produce about 150m2 per hour and 1200m2 per day.

3. Unit cost analysis of artificial machine power: According to the conservative estimate of 600m2, the monthly output is 18000m2. According to this process operation, the average monthly salary of each person is 1,000 yuan, and the labor cost is about 0.44 yuan/m2.

4. Unit consumption analysis of power consumption: The power consumption of the machine is 40KW/H, working eight hours a day, the output is 600m2, and the unit cost of iodization is about 0.5/m2;

5. Machine investment cost analysis: The machines involved: one UV curing machine and one IR leveling machine. The investment of the machine is about 7~110,000 yuan according to the specifications of the customer's products.

6. Unit profit analysis: The market price of UV-coated veneer is 180~250/m2, and the total cost is 100~130 yuan/m2 (calculating the cost of PU paint and sheet), and the unit profit is 80~120 yuan/m2.

The development of UV spray coatings has intensified the application of UV-curable coatings in more fields. According to relevant statistics, with the improvement of production technology in the industry and the increasing environmental awareness of consumers, the application of UV-curable coatings has good environmental protection. The characteristics of fastness, fast curing, abrasion resistance, chemical resistance and high hardness are developing at a rate of more than twice the rate per year. However, it should be pointed out that from the current research and product level, UV water-based paints are not perfect. It also has some drawbacks like the general water-based paint: due to the use of aqueous solvents, the drying of the paint film is not only energy-consuming and time-consuming, but also corrosive to the iron substrate. In particular, the need to add antifreeze and preservatives during transportation and storage also complicates the formulation system. In general, the ruler is long and the inch is short. The future improvement of water-based UV coatings also needs to solve many technical problems, but the unification of environmental requirements and performance for coating development is always a direction we pursue.
