Britain breaks through energy storage limits and tests lithium-sulfur solid-state batteries successfully

High energy density, large volume capacity, good safety, high temperature and low temperature resistance, long cycle life, high power charge and discharge and many other characteristics are the needs of automotive power batteries. According to foreign media reports, the British lithium-sulfur battery technology company OXIS Energy successfully tested a battery cell sample with an energy density of 471Wh / kg.

At present, there are many technical routes for power batteries, including ternary, lithium iron phosphate, lithium manganate and lithium titanate, but the energy density of these types of power batteries has theoretical limits. If new materials can be found, there will be a revolutionary breakthrough in energy density. Lithium-sulfur batteries use sulfur as the positive electrode and metallic lithium as the negative electrode. The theoretical specific capacity of the material and the theoretical specific energy of the battery are up to 1675mAh / g and 2600Wh / kg, respectively. Lithium-sulfur batteries have low production costs and high energy density, but their service life is short. OXIS Energy is working with partners to study lithium metal protection mechanisms to increase the life of lithium-sulfur batteries.
