In a bold step toward sustainable mobility, Volvo is exploring an innovative concept that could revolutionize how electric and hybrid vehicles charge. Imagine a future where your car isn't just powered by electricity, but also carries its own solar charging solution—foldable, portable, and easily stored in the trunk. This futuristic idea is set to make its debut later this year in Rome as part of the Volvo V60 diesel hybrid.
The concept, known as the Pure Tension Pavilion, was chosen as the winning design in the 2013 Pure Volvo Pavilion competition. It reimagines the traditional exhibition booth by combining functionality with aesthetics. Not only does it offer shelter and a striking visual presence, but it also doubles as a solar-powered charging station.
This unique structure is made from a tensioned film system using HDPE mesh membranes, a carbon fiber frame, and built-in photovoltaic panels. When not in use, it can be fully folded and neatly tucked away inside the car’s trunk, making it both practical and space-efficient.
Developed through a collaboration between Synthesis Design + Architecture, Buro Happold, and US Fabric Images, the product represents a creative fusion of design, engineering, and sustainability. Although it has already been delivered to Volvo Car Italia, it's still considered an experimental prototype and not yet available for commercial sale.
While the technology is promising, there are still challenges to overcome before it becomes a mainstream feature. However, this project marks an exciting step forward in the integration of renewable energy into everyday transportation. (Compiled by Tao Shuhua)
