How to install high speed bearings

High-speed bearing installation and adjustment is a critical process that requires careful consideration of multiple factors to ensure optimal performance under extreme conditions. One of the main challenges lies in selecting the appropriate fit and clearance for high-speed bearings, which must meet both high-precision and high-temperature requirements. When determining the fit and clearance, two key factors must be taken into account: first, the changes in size and hardness that occur as temperature increases from normal to high levels; second, the effects of centrifugal forces at high speeds, which can cause deformation and alter the shape of the bearing components. These factors make it difficult to maintain the bearing's precision and performance if the fit and clearance are not properly calculated. To minimize deformation of the raceway after installation, the interference fit should not be too large. However, the centrifugal force at high speeds and thermal expansion due to high temperatures can reduce the normal pressure on the mating surfaces or even cause them to loosen. Therefore, the amount of interference must be carefully calculated, considering these dynamic factors. The effective interference at normal temperature and speed may not be sufficient for high-speed applications. In cases where calculations become too conflicting—typically at ultra-high speeds—dual lubrication methods such as ring lubrication combined with hydrostatic lubrication may be used. However, this approach could potentially exceed the dmn value (a parameter indicating the limit of bearing performance) and may not always be suitable. When setting the clearance for high-speed bearings, it's essential not only to consider thermal expansion but also the impact of shaft elongation due to heat. The ideal clearance should be achieved when the bearing is operating at its working temperature, ensuring that the center of the ball groove in both the inner and outer rings is precisely aligned. To minimize internal friction and relative slip, it's best to avoid adjusting the clearance by axially displacing the inner and outer rings. Additionally, the material of the bearing components tends to soften and deform more easily at high temperatures, increasing the risk of permanent deformation after repeated thermal cycles. This must be considered during the design and installation phases. Regarding the host-related parts, high-speed bearings must be mounted in a rotating system that has been dynamically balanced to ensure smooth operation. The shaft and the bearing housing must have higher dimensional and positional accuracy than standard requirements, particularly in terms of coaxiality and perpendicularity between the shoulder and the seat hole or journal. These considerations must take into account the effects of high speed and high temperature during operation. The shaft support system should combine high rigidity with minimal weight. To achieve this balance, measures such as reducing surface roughness and applying surface treatments to enhance strength can be used. In some cases, hollow shafts may be employed to reduce the overall mass of the system while maintaining structural integrity.
