China's machine tool industry is "big but not strong"

Li Jingming, deputy secretary-general of the China Machine Tool Industry Association, said recently that China's machine tool industry was “outstanding” in the context of the world financial crisis last year, and its output value ranked first in the world. However, although the Chinese machine tool industry is “big” but “not strong”, there is still a big gap with the world's advanced level.

Statistics show that last year China's machine tool industry completed a total output value of 401.4 billion yuan, an increase of 16.1% year-on-year, and sales revenue increased by 12.2%. Under the severe impact of the financial crisis on the global industry, China is the only country in the world that maintains its growth in production value and sales revenue of machine tools.

Li Jingming said that although China's machine tool output ranks first in the world, it is still the world's largest importer of machine tools. The high-end CNC machine tools needed for China's economic construction mainly rely on imports; China has a relatively complete industrial chain, but it is developing high-end. The numerical control system and functional components required for CNC machine tools are mainly from overseas; China has the largest number of machine tool manufacturers in the world, but it also lacks the famous multinational machine tool group and world-class “fine, special and special” small giant enterprises; Exporting "two high and one capital (high pollution, high energy consumption, resource)" products, but importing high-end products made from these export products.

Li Jingming said that the national equipment manufacturing industry adjustment and revitalization plan proposes to rely on key projects to seize key projects in industries such as steel, automobiles, petrochemicals, ships, light industry, textiles, non-ferrous metals, electronic information, and defense and military industries to achieve equipment autonomy. Improve the level of supporting products, consolidate the foundation of industrial development, and promote the optimization and upgrading of the industry. To this end, accelerating structural adjustment has become an urgent requirement for China's machine tool industry.
