U.S. company develops ultra-high voltage battery monitor

On October 31st, Linear Technology Corporation released new product information: The company introduced the LTCæ‚–6804, a high-voltage battery monitor for hybrid electric and electric vehicles and other high-voltage, stacked battery systems.

It is understood that this product can measure 12 series up to 4.2V series connected batteries with 16-bit resolution and better than 0.04% accuracy. With a sub-surface zener voltage reference (similar to the one used in high-precision meters), high accuracy can be maintained over time, temperature, and operating conditions. When stacked in series, the LTC6804 allows measuring the voltage of each cell in a large high-voltage system. There are 6 operating modes available to optimize the low-pass response of the update rate, resolution, and built-in 3rd-order noise filter. In the fastest mode, all batteries can be measured within 290μs.

According to Brian Black, product marketing manager of Linear Technology’s Signal Conditioning Products Division, leveraging Linear Technology’s proprietary product interfaces, multiple LTC6804s can be interconnected over long distances and work simultaneously. The isoSPI interface is integrated into each LTC6804, using only twisted pairs to provide high RF noise immunity at up to 1Mbps and up to 100 meters of wiring. There are two communication options available: For the LTC6804-1, multiple devices are daisy-chained and one host processor passes through all devices; for the LTC6804-2, multiple devices are connected in parallel to the host processor for each device. Individual addressing.

The LTC6804 is designed to minimize power consumption. In sleep mode, the LTC6804 draws less than 4μA from the battery. The LTC6804 is designed to exceed the environmental, reliability and safety requirements of automotive and industrial applications. The LTC6804 is fully rated to operate over a temperature range of -40°C to 125°C. The device is designed for ISO26262 (ASIL)-compliant systems and a full set of self-tests ensures that there is no potential for fault conditions.

According to Mike Kult鄄gen, Linear Technology's design manager, “The LTC6804 integrates more than 30 years of analog circuit experience and valuable lessons learned in the automotive battery management industry. The device provides both on the bench and on the road. Excellent performance.” Together with the LTC6804, Linear Technology also introduced the LTC6820 isoSPI transceiver. The LTC6820 implements bidirectional transmission of a serial peripheral interface (SPI) bus across an isolation barrier of 100 meters.
