New global shipbuilding orders increased year-on-year in the first quarter of 2014

Abstract According to HIS statistics, as of March this year, the cumulative order volume for the Chinese shipbuilding industry reached 11.94 million GT (343 ships), representing a two-fold increase compared to the same period last year. During the same time frame, the South Korean industry secured 10.19 million GT (124 ships), marking a 54% year-on-year growth. Meanwhile, Japan's order volume stood at 5.74 million GT (192 ships), showing a significant 68% rise. Together, China, South Korea, and Japan accounted for 40%, 34%, and 19% of global orders, respectively. In the first quarter of 2025, bulk carrier orders totaled 14.95 million GT (316 ships), reflecting a 170% increase from the previous year. Oil tanker orders amounted to 6.51 million GT (128 ships), up 46% year-on-year. Liquefied gas carriers saw 4.77 million GT (55 ships) in new orders, while liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessels added 1.87 million GT (42 ships). Additionally, as of March this year, global new ship deliveries reached 18.01 million GT (739 ships), a 20% decrease compared to the same period last year. China delivered 6.61 million GT (230 ships), down 16% year-on-year; South Korea delivered 5.34 million GT (89 ships), a drop of 33%; and Japan delivered 4.44 million GT (157 ships), down 13%. By the end of March, the global shipbuilding industry had 198.55 million GT (6,354 ships) in hand-held orders, a 23% increase from the previous year. This data highlights the ongoing shifts in global shipbuilding dynamics, with Asia continuing to dominate both in terms of orders and production. The strong performance of Chinese and South Korean yards contrasts with the slower pace in Japan, indicating varying levels of recovery across the region. As demand for shipping continues to evolve, these trends are likely to shape future market strategies and investment decisions.
